A Hayward man was killed early this morning when the big rig he was driving went off the Bay Bridge S curve, plunging 200 feet onto Yerba Buena Island, the California Highway Patrol said.

Two tie rods came loose from the Bay Bridge at 5:30pm today, falling onto the upper level of the bridge where one person was injured and three cars were hit. The upper and lower levels have both been closed to traffic and a construction team is currently at work on the bridge.

A 19-year-old USC student was killed early Sunday as she crossed Jefferson Boulevard on the edge of campus in a hit-and-run incident that also left a male companion critically injured, police said.The deceased was Adrianna Bachan, a freshman from Santa Barbara.
