Two tie rods came loose from the Bay Bridge at 5:30pm today, falling onto the upper level of the bridge where one person was injured and three cars were hit. The upper and lower levels have both been closed to traffic and a construction team is currently at work on the bridge.

A 19-year-old USC student was killed early Sunday as she crossed Jefferson Boulevard on the edge of campus in a hit-and-run incident that also left a male companion critically injured, police said.The deceased was Adrianna Bachan, a freshman from Santa Barbara. Injured was Marcus Garfinkle, a student from Scottsdale, Ariz., USC spokesman James Grant said.The two victims were walking in the crosswalk at Hoover Street about 3 a.m.

An M.T.A. construction truck struck an overhead road sign on the Queens-bound plaza of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge at 1:10 p.m. on Friday, causing the steel sign structure to come crashing down on all six lanes and injuring two people who were on the truck, according to M.T.A. Bridges and Tunnels. The accident, which did not injure other passengers, the agency said, forced the immediate closure of the bridge. Cars were being rerouted to the Throgs Neck or Robert F. Kennedy Bridges just before the onslaught of Friday afternoon traffic.
