A wind-swept brush fire believed to have damaged at least two homes and threatened more than 50 others is 60 percent contained, officials said tonight.

About 50 structures were destroyed and four firefighters were injured in a multiple-alarm blaze yesterday at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center.It was not clear where the fire started, but two cottages were reported burning about 4:30 p.m. and strong wind caused the fire to spread quickly, officials at the scene said. The fire was put out by about 9 p.m.

Capt. Mike Deponce of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department said that as of 6 a.m. today at least 1,300 acres have burned in the Jesusita fire and that there are now 1,394 fire personnel assigned to the blaze.Ten injuries have been reported, although it is unclear how many of those injuries involved firefighters and how many involved civilians. Deponce said most of the residents living in the foothills have evacuated.

A wildfire continues to burn out of control near the town of Bonny Doon located in the Santa Cruz mountains about 70 miles south of San Francisco. The Bonny Doon fire, which started Wednesday evening, has already caused the evacuation of hundreds of homes as firefighters continue to fight the blaze in an effort to extinguish the fire.

After morning optimism, the afternoon has turned to disaster in the mountains above Santa Barbara , as the Jesusita Fire has reached explosive proportions.“This thing is way out of control,” said city fire spokesperson John Ahlman at about 4:15 p.m. “All we can do now is try to save some homes.”

At 9.30 on Tuesday morning, the Park Hospital in Hyderabad, a five-floor building, found itself on fire. The relatively new hospital (it was opened six months ago) could have turned into a death trap-  it did not have adequate fire safety measures including fire exits. Many passengers jumped out of their rooms to escape the flames that engulfed the post-operative wards and the Intensive Care Unit.
