A day after the Taliban suicide attack near Indian embassy in Kabul, foreign secretary Nirupama Rao on Friday arrived here to take stockof the situation and discuss the issue with the Afghan leadership.

Last year, a suicide car bomber had rammed the gate of the Indian embassy in Kabul. Among those killed were senior IFS officer VV Rao and defence attache Brigadier R D Mehta.

At least three people were killed in a suicide bombing near the Indian embassy in the Afghan capital Thursday morning.

The explosion occurred on the road on which the India embassy and the Afghan interior ministry is located. The blast destroyed many cars, said TV channel TOLO.

Nirupama Rao, India's ambassador to China, is set to succeed Shivshankar Menon as India's next foreign secretary.Rao's name has been sent for approval to the Cabinet Committee on Appointments, reliable sources told IANS. A formal announcement is expected to be made soon.

A powerful explosion rocked the centre of Afghanistan's capital early on Thursday near the Indian Embassy and the Interior Ministry, where dozens of civilians were killed in an attack last year. The bomb blast , which police believed was the work of a suicide bomber, took place around 0827 local time (0927 IST).

No Indians had been killed in the suicide blast outside the Indian embassy here on Thursday morning but some had been injured, Indian ambassador to Afghanistan Jayant Prasad said.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today said the Afghanistan Government should provide extra seeurity to Indian Embassy in Kabul, where a bomb blast left 17 people dead and wounded 60 others.

Reacting to the attack on Indian students in Australia , which took place on Wednesday (May 27), Australian Foreign Minister for foreign affairs, Stephen Smith in a statement to the media on Thursday said, "As Foreign Minister , I'm appalled by these attacks and I condemn them absolutely.
