One of India's most ambitious infrastructure projects — a $335 million bridge that cuts across a bay to link Mumbai with its fast-growing suburbs — opens Wednesday after being delayed for years by a thicket of lawsuits and bureaucratic wrangling.

The first bridge to be built over the sea in India has witnessed massive traffic congestion a day after it was opened to the public.

Two tie rods came loose from the Bay Bridge at 5:30pm today, falling onto the upper level of the bridge where one person was injured and three cars were hit. The upper and lower levels have both been closed to traffic and a construction team is currently at work on the bridge.
