Armed private security guards hired to defend the base where two British soldiers were shot dead in Northern Ireland did not return fire when the terrorists began shooting, it emerged today.The civilian guards - armed only with handguns - did not open fire even when the Real IRA killers continued to shoot at wounded soldiers as they lay on the ground.
