Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Friday announced that former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly will lead the side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season-III next year, replacing New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum.

Ever since the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach and Director of cricket operation of KKR John Buchanan proposed an experiment with multiple captains, the team has been shrouded in controversy. Buchanan seemed keen on trying out an all new strategy of having rotating captaincy to a team.

Sourav Ganguly met Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan in Mumbai earlier on Saturday.Even though the two were there for a promotional event for the Knight Riders, sources have told CNN-IBN that the duo discussed the captaincy issue that has sparked off a huge debate.

It’s not just Kolkata’s icon Sourav Ganguly who has been dropped from captaining Shah Rukh Khan’s IPL team this season. The name “Kolkata” has been dropped from all Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) merchandise.The team is still called KKR, but official sources said this could change to Knight Riders in the next IPL season.
