For the iPhone 2G model, about 1500 songs can be stored in the 4 GB version and 2000 songs can be stored in the 8 GB version. For the iPhone 3G model 2500 songs can be stored in the 8 GB version and 5000 songs can be stored in the 16 GB version. Note that the capacity mentioned above is with respect to the fact that no other data is stored in them.

Estimated numbers assume you have a Mac-formatted iPhone. Windows cannot hold as much. Windows-formatted iPhone's will store approximately 100-500 less songs due to their format type.
