Does the V-Chip Work? Is it Only a Bandage?

14

April

Are V-Chips (in televisions) designed to block indecent technology the answer to censorship? Do they really work? Why do some television programs get publicized in the first place? What is the FCC thinking? Shouldn’t all multimedia be censored as if children are viewing everything anyway?
Thankfully, the FCC has standard rules for television content, but it’s not enough. Most definitely, we need more censorship in all forms of media. Parents are already acting as police to their children―but why is the media making television viewing even more difficult than it already is? All programming (including commercials) should be rated, and as we know, advertisers are pushing the envelope every bit as much as television programmers.
What is even more complicated is that designers and advertisers who squirm or refuse to participate in tasteless advertising campaigns, music, or television programs stand to lose their jobs. This is the oddest predicament that faces multimedia artists today; yet the average employee in other professions are held in high esteem for their high moral ethics.
How can the FCC regulate and respond to the hundreds of thousands of complaints of valid concerns of censorship for the protection of jobs and families? Is the FCC going to support and protect employee’s jobs? Not all the multimedia artists want to be part of unwholesome advertising found in magazines, music, and programs being broadcasted throughout America today. No doubt about it, everything is subjective. Censorship and what is considered to be decent advertising and television programming is delicate ground. So, if you are offended by the current FCC censorship standards, the V-Chip is a technological way to help regulate your television programming for your children.
But, does the average person know how to find the V-Chip in their television? Do we even know if our televisions have them? Parents with young children need to find out. Even though there are unintended consequences for V-Chips such as having to put up with more offensive programming such as South Park; for the time being, this is our only immediate technological option for unmonitored censorship for obscenity, indecency, and profanity. The History Of King Kong: From The Big Screen To The iPod Screen

14

April

King Kong is a fictional giant gorilla who stars in books, tv shows, video games and movies that bear his name. Though many know him because of his latest 2005 remake – King Kong’s groundbreaking film came to the screen in 1933 with the first remake being released in 1976.
Let’s take a stroll through the history of King Kong and reveal the awesome legacy he has built.
“King Kong” - 1933
The original groundbreaking classic was highly acclaimed for its use of special effects using stop-motion models. Yet it was widely criticized for its depiction of the Skull Island tribes people. This movie was inspired by the success of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World,” about an expedition to a plateau filled with prehistoric animals. The film went down in history as one of the great film adventures to be produced in that time period, and is considered a classic today.
“Son of Kong” - 1933
After Kong has wrecked New York and sent producer Carl Denham into financial ruin, Denham flees back to Skull Island in search of treasure and discovers King Kong’s albino son. This sequel was considered mediocre at best.
“King Kong vs. Godzilla” - 1962
Kong is discovered on Farou Island and brought back to Japan. Godzilla, long thought destroyed, breaks free for an iceberg and heads for Japan. The authorities plan to bring Kong to Mt. Fuji where he will encounter, and, hopefully, destroy Godzilla. However the use of suitmation for King Kong aroused bitter hatred from fans of King Kong towards the horrid look and the fact that Kong had been brought to life in this manner.
“King Kong” The TV Series” - 1966-69
This was a popular ABC Saturday morning TV show based on the famous 1930’s monster movie. In this version, Kong lives peacefully on an island with the Bond family and fights various villains. It didn’t follow the premise of the movie at all.
“King Kong Escapes” - 1967
Another Toho film (following King Kong vs Godzilla). A jungle expedition is attacked by a dinosaur. They are rescued by King Kong who takes a liking to the prettiest female member of the expedition. Dr. Hu. She, however, turns out to be an evil scientist with plans to take over the world by building a huge “Mechni-Kong,” a robot designed to kill the real Kong.
“King Kong” - 1976
Prior to the 2005 release, this is probably the most remembered film in the King Kong series. An expedition goes exploring for oil. A shipwrecked woman, is captured by the natives and offered as a sacrifice to King Kong who falls in love with her. The woman is rescued and Kong is captured. He is taken to the US and used for exhibition. Kong escapes captivity to elope with the model and wreaks havoc on the city.
“King Kong Lives” - 1986
This sequel is by the same production company as the 1976 film. Kong survives his fall from the sky and is kept at a university research center outside Atlanta in a coma where it is discovered he requires a heart transplant. A female Kong is found in the jungles of Borneo and is transported to the research center for a transfusion that will enable King Kong to have his operation. Romance blooms between the two Kongs and they make an escape from the research center.
“King Kong” – 2005
A Universal Pictures remake of the original by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, best known for directing the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The most recent incarnation of Kong is also the longest, running three hours and seven minutes.
The King Kong film character was the inspiration for several video games including:
* 1981 Donkey Kong and subsequent spin-offs
* The Rampage games by Atari/Midway
* Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game Of The Movie published by Ubisoft.
* War of the Monsters is a 3D fighting game developed by Incognito Entertainment for Sony PlayStation 2
The fascination with King Kong can continue with the launch of the fifth generation Apple iPod with video capabilities and digital entertainment companies like iVideoBlast.com. Thanks to them you can now enjoy the King Kong vs Godzilla movie on your iPod.
As you can see, although King Kong is being celebrated in the 2005 remake, he has become quite the phenomenon over the years. From scary to funny (though not meant to be). From thrilling to thought-provoking.
King Kong will continue to fascinate audiences for many years to come. Long live Kong.

King Kong Review, Killer Graphics and a Killer Cast

14

April

We all have seen the original King Kong Movie probably more than once and so you ask why should you go see the New Remake of King Kong? Well let me tell you this movie is much different than the original and the graphics and special effects will literally blow you away. The cast is awesome, the acting is great, but once again the special effects are award-winning quality. Not only does King Kong rock the world in the movie, you will swear he jumps out of the screen into the real world by the time you spill your popcorn on the folks next to you. What a perfect time to release such a blockbuster like King Kong again.
Indeed this is one movie you must see and you will want to see it on the big screen for full affect, I would not wait for the movie to come out in video. Naomi Watts does a killer job of exciting the imagination and the giant guerilla too, who wouldn’t want a piece of that action, said the two guys in front of us. If you thought the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were convincing and got your adrenaline flowing, just wait until you see King Kong rolling across the screen like thunder is Dolby surround a sound. Indeed this movie will no doubt take the awards in Hollywood with the same thunder as King Kong takes to those skyscrapers. You must see this in 2006.

Musings Using Randall, Rebecca and The Apprentice: Obstacles to Opportunities: The Great Reframe

14

April

Do you hear the word, “ruthless” during your daily
activities in the last few days? That’s the word being
tossed about as folks discuss Randall’s choice on live
television Thursday night.
As coaches we work with intelligent, well traveled clients
who keep tabs on current events. Even the frivolous ones
such as the TV show, The Apprentice. The recent concluding
segment which resulted in hiring the 4th apprentice provoked
discussions among our active, goal-workshop attendees
wondering about the apparent conflict when chosen Randall
said, “No” to the option to hire Rebecca that same night.
Wow. What a surprise… especially when reviewing Donald
Trump’s original question which was, “Randall, if you were
me, would you hire Rebecca also?” “If you were me” is the
key phrase uttered by this successful, competent, wealthy
business entrepreneur. Taking the lessons from wherever
they come, i.e. taking the coaching, it’s interesting to
note the different observations as Rebecca, Donald Trump and
Randall concluded the interview process.
As coaches we ask our clients to learn from many different
areas and to hold a higher vision for themselves. This
particular show is a way of observing how young, competent,
creative minds, organize in an intense business situation.
Whether relaxing at the spa or planning their next strategy,
the contestants use their talents and innate intelligence to
accomplish tasks and impress the Trump organization.
The coaches chime in:
Would you have said, “Yes” to the Rebecca question? “Of
course”, says Leslie, the coach…the question was “…if you
were me”. It seems logical to add a very competent, earnest
& ethical woman to the mix. And, how delightful to do it
that same night! Coach Kris points out that Rebecca showed
grace and creativity under pressure. Her “can do” attitude
prevailed even in the face of obstacles such as the broken
leg. You’ve got to admire her for that and more.
You saw both Randall and Rebecca take a stand for
themselves:
•How do you take a stand for yourself?
•How clear are you? Randall was clear and his decision came
with ease. Rebecca maintained her composure and remained
professional. Clarity can be a tremendous guiding force.
•You are an intelligent reader, how do you see it?
We are reminded of the wisdom below:
“…live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then,
someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even
noticing it, live your way into the answer.” Quotes our
wise advisor, Rainer Maria Rilke.
What do you notice as a result of these musings about The
Apprentice? How might you use these examples to do
something different? What change are you ready to make?
Harnessing your own courage from examples such as these, you
can support yourself into the well-lived life your desire.
Go for it!

Taking the Coaching From Whence it Comes: TV & The Apprentice

14

April

One of the things we life coaches do is keep our eyes open
for coaching that comes from unusual places, and in this
case it was the final episode of the Apprentice. Certainly
television can be used to provoke intelligent dialogue about
ethics and principles. Did you see The Apprentice the night
Randall was hired and Rebecca wasn’t hired? Randall took a
stand. He said, “No” when directly asked by Donald Trump
whether Rebecca should be hired the same night. He was
clear. He was living within his beliefs and values. He had
a choice. As do you. We always have choices.
As life coaches we are often asked to support our clients to
make new choices. Often these represent significant changes
from the way they used to do things, and these new actions
may seem awkward or out of the blue, especially to our
loved ones. Yet, when we define our values and personal
standards and chose to make choices based upon those, our
life moves forward with much more ease. That awkward phase
lasts only a short time as we step into the new way of being
and behaving.
Try on these words as you think about the professional and
competent behavior demonstrated by Rebecca and Randall
during The Apprentice:
•Alert
•Clear
•Courageous
•Empowering
•Flexible
•Focused
You have a choice and can decide to adopt some of these
words to describe how you will behave the rest of the
week…the rest of the month, or all year. You can design
your own degree of competency whether visiting a spa for
relaxation and rejuvenation or preparing to deliver a
motivating and inspiring presentation to your colleagues.
The choice is yours; it always is. You are on this earth
to add your unique piece to this puzzle called life and you
have opportunities to turn every obstacle into a chance for
greatness much as you saw Rebecca do during her time on The
Apprentice.
Randall was put on the spot, took a stand, made a decision.
It’s proven to be a controversial one and probably
responsible for propelling Rebecca into a very desirable
position she wouldn’t otherwise have had if Randall’s answer
been “Yes.” So, bear this in mind when you get a ‘no’ from
one of your colleagues or family members. It could be a
‘yes’ in disguise and the start of a fantastic new
beginning.
Questions to ponder:
•What no can give that is actually a yes?
•Are you willing to ask for support to making a change?
•Do you have something you know you’ve been wanting to do,
yet keep postponing?
•Are you aware that there is a contribution that only you
can make?
As coaches, one of our favorite reminders is the following
sentence: “The best way to get somewhere is to let yourself
go.” It’s time. You can go. With
support from a coach or this article or your own inner
courage, you, too, can take a stand and design the life of
your dreams. Yes you can!

Does Age Matter? The Apprentice

14

April

Donald Trump’s television show, The Apprentice, attracted
the largest audience the night he was to hire his 4th
apprentice. Much about television is a numbers game which
prompted us to think about the numbers in the show. Randall
is 34, Rebecca is 24. Does age matter? Was it his ten
years of maturity that made the difference, or what he chose
to do with those ten years - his education and running
successful businesses? Does a 20 something candidate have a
chance against a 30 something candidate? What do you think?
It also begs the question, is age a barrier to success?
Some of us feel old at 40. Our attitude and actions can
make any number seem old. What if you go around telling
yourself, “I’m too old to (sing in a choir, horseback ride
across the range, insert your item here)?” Is that really
true? Perhaps you are too old to climb Mt. Everest; that
isn’t to say there aren’t still plenty of things left to do
regardless of physical limitations. Who is stopping you
from giving the recital, climbing the hill, doing what you
really want to do? As coaches, we disregard the, “I’m too
(insert complaint here)” excuse. There is always a way to
modify whatever it is you want such that it can be achieved.
Is there a library nearby? A hobby club you might join?
Films to be watched? There are many ways to accomplish
learning…and you can find the essence of your goals and
dreams in many different ways.
Think about it:
•What is the thing you’ve been telling yourself you’re too
old to do (your Mt. Everest)?
•When you look at that thing you’ve been wanting to do,
what’s at the heart of it and where else might you find its’
essence?
•Look for support. Getting support enables you to do what
you want with more ease.
As coaches, we see age doesn’t matter. There are 23 years
between us and we share times when we are being wise and
times when we’re being silly or unwise. We share work
ethics, steadfast support of our clients, interesting
balance in our lives and much more. Age is a number and
counts for things like a senior pass to the movies and
possibly some extra points on the wisdom-o-meter, yet the 40
(or 30, or 20) somethings among us have plenty to offer as
well. Our interaction as life coaches and workshop leaders
is enriched by the difference in our ages, perspectives, and
points of view. We say, “Yes” to it all and invite you to
do the same. Let age support you when you need it to and be
willing to resist using it as an excuse for postponing going
for your goals and dreams.

2006 Holographic Technology Trends

14

April

Major advances and strides were made in Holographic Projection research and development of data visualization. Many new techniques of commanding light to project data and digital imagery into holographic projection has been done recently as scientists and engineers blur the lines between real life, entertainment, video games, movies, augmented reality and the virtual reality realms. Systems have been simplified and they really work and the first time view is generally amazed at the images and stunned. Some are so taken aback that they run out and tell all their friends and talk about it for weeks on end. 2005 was the year that scientists figured it all out, now in 2006 we will see many applications enter the market place for the consumer;
http://www.physorg.com/news2516.html
We will also see in 2006 many applications being used by the military and in space as well. The possibilities are endless and the Xbox 360 Virtual Reality Living Room is near the point of blowing your socks off with new and improved action that looks so real that you will be blown away. We will also see movie theatres improving ticket sales by sectioning off one or more of their rooms for the ultimate 3D experience in a similar venue to IMAX only with surround a sound and Holographic images, putting the movie goer in the middle of the action. Think on this in 2006.

Memoirs of a Geisha

14

April

Memoirs of a Geisha is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Arthur Golden. Brought to life by Rob Marshall Memoirs tells the tale of Sayuri Nita a young woman sold by her father to a geisha house and went on to become the most successful geisha during her time.
While I usually wouldn’t start off talking about what is wrong with a movie Memoirs has some glaring problems. The main problem is that this story of geisha is very Japanese, deeply rooted in Japanese culture and tradition yet all of the leading ladies are Chinese and everyone is speaking broken English. So to wrap that up neatly, Memoirs of a Geisha is a story of Japanese women, played by Chinese actresses who are all speaking broken American English. It begs the question: what was Rob Marshall thinking? It’s a little like when they had white actors playing Native Americans or Black people in American movies.
Now, if you can get past that gaffe, Memoirs is visually stunning. The sets are just breathtaking. It is filled with the most amazing settings and the most perfect flowers. I mean the blossoms on many of the trees were so perfect I just can’t believe they were real. And the beauty of the movie didn’t just stop with the settings but Colleen Atwood, the movies costume designer needs an Oscar nod becomes the costumes, from the women’s Kimonos to the men’s suits, were all stunning.
Memoirs is high on visual gratification but a little low on storytelling. While a well acted movie it was missing a little something. This something would take the movie from being a pretty good movie to a great one. Michelle Yeoh is excellent as Mameha, mentor to Ziyi Zhang’s Sayuri. She manages to be fierce, calculating and vulnerable while maintaing a perfectly polite, respectful demeanor.
Ziyi Zhang doesn’t quite work as Sayuri, the latest geisha phenom who lusts after a man she may never have. While her performance isn’t flat it doesn’t have the range of emotion this character calls for. She’s not quite angry enough when she needs to be, she doesn’t have the overflow of emotion that this character needs to get through her tragic and demanding existence, when she should show restraint she seems to disconnect instead. Ziyi Zhang showed us her amazing acting talent in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but seemed to leave those talents at home for Memoirs.
The biggest disappointment of the movie was Li Gong as Hatsumomo. While I don’t think it’s her fault but the way Rob Marshall and writers Robin Swicord and Doug Wright interpreted the character from the novel, Hatsumomo comes across as vain, vindictive, insipid and whorish. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes Hatsumomo’s character is vain and vindictive in the novel but there are reasons for this behavior that the movie barely touches on. They also portray her romance with a neighborhood young man as merely a fling without underscoring the isolation and loneliness of the geisha world.
The men in the movie are wholly underwhelming and don’t bear mentioning. All in all Memoirs is a very good film that barely misses being a really great one. It is definitely worth viewing if for no other reason than to immerse yourself in the beautiful, sad and mysterious world of the geisha.

UFO: I Chat with the Real King Kong

14

April

“Can’t you ever get off that antique you call a computer?”
It wasn’t my wife it was Xrytspet. My wife says that my computer is too up-to-date, too expensive, and too available. She never calls it an antique.
I didn’t turn my head. I said, “Scram, Xrytspet!”
She said, “Writing about King Kong?”
“Scram!”
“I can take you to Skull Island.”
I said, “There is no Skull Island. There is no King Kong. Scram!”
She said, “I can get you there in a minute.”
The next thing I knew we were on the beach at Skull Island. A heavy fog hovered over us and the surf was swishing up over my feet. I said, “Couldn’t you at least get us on land, Xrytspet?”
“Sorry!” she said. “A few steps and you’ll be out of the water.”
I said, “Now what? I can’t see a thing.”
A bearded man came out of the fog. He wore a Panama hat, a scraggly red shirt, and torn britches that were faded by the sun from a deep blue to a dull gray. I said, “Who are you?”
Xrytspet said, “This is Jonathan Hawthorne. He is our interpreter.”
“Interpreter? Why do we need an interpreter, Xrytspet?”
“So that you can talk with King Kong. My language module does not include the animal dialects. I didn’t think I would need it. I can shoot back to Fenton and get it but that would take me a second but you would have to wait for eons. By the time I got back, you would be long gone with that short meaningless lifetime of yours.”
I said, “You watched Men in Black didn’t you, Xrytspet?”
“What else is there to do at your place? So I watched it. But the Bug was right.”
I shook hands with Jonathan Hawthorne. I said, “I’m sorry we disturbed you. She thinks that King Kong is real.”
He said, “And you think that creature is real?” He pointed at Xrytspet.
I said, “You’ll get use to her. If you want her to change her appearance, just ask her. You know how women are.”
He said, “Over the years I’ve learned to leave things as they are. They can get worse, you know.”
Gradually the sun cleared the fog and we could see the jungle. I said, “I thought there was a big stockade here to keep Kong out of the village.
Jonathan said, “You’ve seen the movie. But think about it, Jarhead. If King Kong can climb the Empire State building, holding a girl in one hand and swinging his fist at airplanes with the other, don’t you think he could climb a 30 foot wall.”
Xrytspet said, “Jonathan, you are getting to know Taylor Jones, the hack writer.
Ignoring the insults I said, “So, where is he?”
Jonathan pointed towards the mountains. “Up there!”
I said¸ “Let’s go home, Xrytspet. I’m not much for climbing.”
Zap! We all three are in the mountains and there is King Kong sitting on a log, his big rump hanging over the edge like a down pillow. Our size was so small that he didn’t even notice we were there.
Jonathan took a big stick and smashed it down on King Kong’s toe. Kong looked down, offered Jonathan a finger, and lifted him up to eye level. Jonathan yelled down, “Shoot!”
“With what? I didn’t bring a canon.”
Xrytspet said, “Idiot! Ask your questions.”
I yelled, “King Kong! I would like to meet your family.”
Jonathan translated and King Kong answered in a voice not proportional to his size. I took my hands off my ears and heard him say, “Kala Topa rak rakka rotofock.”
Xrytspet said, “They are on vacation on an Island called Kala Topa.”
I said, “Why did we hire an interpreter if you can speak Kong?”
She said, “I didn’t know I could until he spoke. I think that one of my modules practiced on the way out here. You can never trust a module. Next question.”
I said, “Xrytspet, ask him how old he is.”
She did and he answered, “Kina lacka knowatol.”
Xrytspet said, “He doesn’t know. But he is 320 earth years old and is still in his teens relative to earthlings like you.”
I said, “Now we are getting somewhere. Here we have something for all mankind. It’s like the fountain of youth. All we need to find out is what he has for breakfast that makes him live so long. This is a worthwhile trip. I’m grateful to you, Xrytspet.”
Xrytspet said, “You don’t want to know what he eats. Now let’s get out of here before he finishes that snack I brought him.”
A piece of Jonathan’s foot fell right next to me. Kong picked it up with two fingers and delicately dropped it into his mouth. That was the last bit of Jonathan.
We ran.

Beverly Hillbillies On Your iPod: New Technology - Same Great Hillbilly Humor

14

April

The Beverly Hillbillies was an instant hit comedy and ranked as the number-one program on television during its first two seasons. The show attracted as many as 60 million viewers per episode and rose to #1 in the ratings faster than any other show.
The unique slapstick humor centered around the Clampett family who struck it rich when an oil well was discovered on their land and they moved to a Beverly Hills mansion. The Beverly Hillbillies was one of CBS’ longest-running comedies.
They deposited their first $25 million in Milburn Drysdale’s Commerce Bank. As Drysdale’s biggest depositors, they received special treatment including Mr. Drysdale moving them into the mansion next door in hopes of helping them become more civilized.
Jed was the clan’s patriarch. He was a widower with much more common sense than anyone gave him credit for. Jed’s mother-in-law, Granny, spent most of her time concocting potions for “medicinal purposes” and trying to find a husband for Elly May. Elly May was a gorgeous young woman who loved “critters” (everything from cats and dogs to skunks and deer). Cousin Jethro was a husky man who was as stupid as he was strong. The Clampetts’ encounters with corrupt politics, unfamiliar fashions, indoor plumbing, and the other trappings of modern life provided hilarious for years of classic comedy.
It entertained audiences for nine years in prime time but was finally canceled because its ratings declined gradually and its audience was too heavily concentrated in rural areas to suit Madison Avenue advertisers. Thanks to the launch of the fifth generation Apple iPod with video capabilities and digital entertainment companies like iVideoBlast.com you can still enjoy antics of Jed and all his clan on your iPod.
