Each type of TV has positives and negatives. Before purchasing a possibly expensive piece of furniture for you home it would be wise to learn a little about each technology. This may prevent you from making a big mistake when you are ready to buy. Once you understand which type of television is right for you it’s a lot easier to take the plunge.
If you are more than 10 years old you probably grew up watching television on a CRT type of TV. CRT stands for cathode ray tube. These televisions are still very popular due to a few advantages they still hold over the newer plasma televisions and other newer types.
If you’ve ever watched a plasma or LCD TV from the side you have probably noticed that the picture is darker from that angle. One of the great things about CRT televisions is that they are still bright even when viewed from the side. Sure, the LCD or plasma television has a great quality picture from the front, but if you plan on placing your TV in an area that will be viewed often from the side you should be testing out all of the different models in that regard. It would be very disappointing to see the great plasma picture quality at the dealer and then get it home and have a darker picture from your viewing point of view.
Another positive with regard to CRT displays is their price. They are more inexpensive than the more modern types of televisions while still producing a very clear and bright picture. They also show the color black truer than most newer models and have no danger of burn-in. On some of the newer models it’s possible to have a bright picture burn into the screen and be faintly visible for the life of the TV.
With all of these positives why are the CRT displays diminishing in popularity? There are two main reasons. One, these television sets are usually bigger, bulkier and heavier. And two, if you want a large wide screen TV that is 42 inches, 50 inches, 60 inches or larger you just cannot find a CRT display that big. So if you have a big wide screen TV in mind you won’t be able to go with the older CRT units.
The last deciding factor about CRT televisions concerns whether you should buy a flat screen or curved screen model. The flat screen versions can be viewed from the side better than the curved screens. The curved screens can distort the picture while the flat screens let you see the picture as it was intended to be seen. The difference may not be apparent when viewed alone, but put them side to side and you will certainly see the difference.
The next type of technology we will look at is the flat panel LCD displays. These come in HDTV (high definition television) or wide screen. If you want to see your DVD movies as you saw them in the movie theater you need to purchase a widescreen TV. LCD is a liquid crystal display and is not only used in televisions, but in computer monitors as well.
LCD displays have a flat screen and are relatively thin in width and lightweight. They have an exceptional picture viewing quality and as with the CRT displays will not produce burn-in. These TVs have high resolution that creates a superior picture.
The biggest problem with LCD flat screens is the fact that their viewing angles are lessened when compared with traditional CRT models. If you get too far off to the side the picture becomes extremely dark. They are also incapable of creating true blacks, another disadvantage when compared to older CRT models. Plus, the larger models can become rather expensive. However, if money is not your major concern and you plan on viewing the TV from directly in front you may decide that this is the best choice for you.
Plasma television sets, also known as plasma HDTV displays, have come way down in price over the last two years. Their prices used to exclude people from buying them, but their prices are now comparable to LCD models.
These TVs have become popular because not only can you get it in a very large screen size, perfect for your favorite movie or sporting event, but it has an excellent picture quality that is also viewable from wide angles. This is a plus over the LCD technology. This TV will give you the perfect “movie experience” at home in your own theater room.
Plasma television displays are great when it comes to picture quality and viewing angles, but their prices may still be slightly higher than other types. They also have a small potential for burn-in. But the big negative is their life span. They are basically not repairable when their bulb burns out. Depending on how much you watch TV you could end up with an expensive unit that will only last a few years. Once the bulb has burned out the TV is generally history. This is not the case with an LCD display where the bulb may cost in the neighborhood of $200, but it can be changed.
Rear projection models also have their positives and negatives. Rear projection CRT HDTV’s are cheaper than the larger plasma and LCD displays, plus they have a flat screen and great picture. The negatives are their size and weight and smaller viewing angles. They are too heavy to hang on a wall and are much wider than the more narrow plasma and LCD units. Also, in a well lit room their picture can seem a little less bright than what is considered ideal.
There are other types of rear projection HDTV units too. The most popular are the LCD and DLP models. Both have flat screens with wide viewing angles, are thin and lightweight which means they can be wall mounted, will not produce burn-in and have terrific picture resolution and quality. Also, when the bulb burns out they can be replaced, unlike the plasma television models. However, they can both be a bit on the expensive side.
Now that you know the differences it’s time to go down to your local electronics store and try them out. A little bit of viewing can go a long way in your determination of what’s best and what’s not. One more piece of advice: when looking at the varied assortment of models at you local store you’ll notice that some have bright pictures and some do not. Do not base your opinion solely on that one thing. The store models will not have their brightness controls all set the same and it’s possible that a dim picture on one of their televisions could easily be adjusted into a magnificent picture.

Nominated for 17 Emmys in its short four-year stint, In Living Color is widely considered the best skit comedy show since SNL. Created by the multitalented star Keenen Ivory Wayans (the eldest child from a large and talented family), the 30-minute TV show became an instant hit for emerging big network competitor FOX in the spring of 1990. Showcasing the talents of the Wayans family (especially blockbuster talent Damon Wayans), along with initial cast members David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, Kim Coles, T’keyah “Crystal” Keymah, Kelly Coffield, and Jim Carrey (who would use the show as a springboard to smash hit movie career that would begin with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994), In Living Color quickly achieved the status of TV cult icon…

A spin-off of the CBS program Petticoat Junction (1963), Green Acres surpassed its predecessor in audience popularity - spending four of its six seasons as a Top 20 Nielsen-rated program. Its family-friendly humor puts Green Acres in the same nostalgic category as shows like The Andy Griffith Show, back when TV sitcoms were all about humor and not as serious as they would later become with the introduction of 1970s stalwarts MASH and All In The Family. The brainchild of creator Jay Sommers, writer for shows such as The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet and Petticoat Junction (where Green Acres characters Sam, Doris, Fred, and Arnold make their first appearances), Green Acres’ unique brand of comedy lives on through a successful and ongoing syndication run, and its catchy theme song even captured the pop culture for a second time when Old Navy incorporated it into one of their trademark clothing commercials…
Green Acres centers around the life of a wealthy Manhattan attorney, Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert), and his elite socialite wife Lisa (Eva Gabor). When Oliver gets a hankering to live out his childhood dream of operating a farm, conman Eustace Haney (Pat Buttram) offers him the deal of a lifetime. Only the deal of a lifetime turns out to be a 160-acre dump in the fictional town of Hooterville. Are V-Chips (in televisions) designed to block indecent technology the answer to censorship? Do they really work? Why do some television programs get publicized in the first place? What is the FCC thinking? Shouldn’t all multimedia be censored as if children are viewing everything anyway?
Thankfully, the FCC has standard rules for television content, but it’s not enough. Most definitely, we need more censorship in all forms of media. Parents are already acting as police to their children―but why is the media making television viewing even more difficult than it already is? All programming (including commercials) should be rated, and as we know, advertisers are pushing the envelope every bit as much as television programmers.
What is even more complicated is that designers and advertisers who squirm or refuse to participate in tasteless advertising campaigns, music, or television programs stand to lose their jobs. This is the oddest predicament that faces multimedia artists today; yet the average employee in other professions are held in high esteem for their high moral ethics.
How can the FCC regulate and respond to the hundreds of thousands of complaints of valid concerns of censorship for the protection of jobs and families? Is the FCC going to support and protect employee’s jobs? Not all the multimedia artists want to be part of unwholesome advertising found in magazines, music, and programs being broadcasted throughout America today. No doubt about it, everything is subjective. Censorship and what is considered to be decent advertising and television programming is delicate ground. So, if you are offended by the current FCC censorship standards, the V-Chip is a technological way to help regulate your television programming for your children.
But, does the average person know how to find the V-Chip in their television? Do we even know if our televisions have them? Parents with young children need to find out. Even though there are unintended consequences for V-Chips such as having to put up with more offensive programming such as South Park; for the time being, this is our only immediate technological option for unmonitored censorship for obscenity, indecency, and profanity. King Kong is a fictional giant gorilla who stars in books, tv shows, video games and movies that bear his name. Though many know him because of his latest 2005 remake – King Kong’s groundbreaking film came to the screen in 1933 with the first remake being released in 1976.
Let’s take a stroll through the history of King Kong and reveal the awesome legacy he has built.
“King Kong” - 1933
The original groundbreaking classic was highly acclaimed for its use of special effects using stop-motion models. Yet it was widely criticized for its depiction of the Skull Island tribes people. This movie was inspired by the success of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World,” about an expedition to a plateau filled with prehistoric animals. The film went down in history as one of the great film adventures to be produced in that time period, and is considered a classic today.
“Son of Kong” - 1933
After Kong has wrecked New York and sent producer Carl Denham into financial ruin, Denham flees back to Skull Island in search of treasure and discovers King Kong’s albino son. This sequel was considered mediocre at best.
“King Kong vs. Godzilla” - 1962
Kong is discovered on Farou Island and brought back to Japan. Godzilla, long thought destroyed, breaks free for an iceberg and heads for Japan. The authorities plan to bring Kong to Mt. Fuji where he will encounter, and, hopefully, destroy Godzilla. However the use of suitmation for King Kong aroused bitter hatred from fans of King Kong towards the horrid look and the fact that Kong had been brought to life in this manner.
“King Kong” The TV Series” - 1966-69
This was a popular ABC Saturday morning TV show based on the famous 1930’s monster movie. In this version, Kong lives peacefully on an island with the Bond family and fights various villains. It didn’t follow the premise of the movie at all.
“King Kong Escapes” - 1967
Another Toho film (following King Kong vs Godzilla). A jungle expedition is attacked by a dinosaur. They are rescued by King Kong who takes a liking to the prettiest female member of the expedition. Dr. Hu. She, however, turns out to be an evil scientist with plans to take over the world by building a huge “Mechni-Kong,” a robot designed to kill the real Kong.
“King Kong” - 1976
Prior to the 2005 release, this is probably the most remembered film in the King Kong series. An expedition goes exploring for oil. A shipwrecked woman, is captured by the natives and offered as a sacrifice to King Kong who falls in love with her. The woman is rescued and Kong is captured. He is taken to the US and used for exhibition. Kong escapes captivity to elope with the model and wreaks havoc on the city.
“King Kong Lives” - 1986
This sequel is by the same production company as the 1976 film. Kong survives his fall from the sky and is kept at a university research center outside Atlanta in a coma where it is discovered he requires a heart transplant. A female Kong is found in the jungles of Borneo and is transported to the research center for a transfusion that will enable King Kong to have his operation. Romance blooms between the two Kongs and they make an escape from the research center.
“King Kong” – 2005
A Universal Pictures remake of the original by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, best known for directing the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The most recent incarnation of Kong is also the longest, running three hours and seven minutes.
The King Kong film character was the inspiration for several video games including:
* 1981 Donkey Kong and subsequent spin-offs
* The Rampage games by Atari/Midway
* Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game Of The Movie published by Ubisoft.
* War of the Monsters is a 3D fighting game developed by Incognito Entertainment for Sony PlayStation 2

We all have seen the original King Kong Movie probably more than once and so you ask why should you go see the New Remake of King Kong? Well let me tell you this movie is much different than the original and the graphics and special effects will literally blow you away. The cast is awesome, the acting is great, but once again the special effects are award-winning quality. Not only does King Kong rock the world in the movie, you will swear he jumps out of the screen into the real world by the time you spill your popcorn on the folks next to you. What a perfect time to release such a blockbuster like King Kong again.
Indeed this is one movie you must see and you will want to see it on the big screen for full affect, I would not wait for the movie to come out in video. Naomi Watts does a killer job of exciting the imagination and the giant guerilla too, who wouldn’t want a piece of that action, said the two guys in front of us. If you thought the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were convincing and got your adrenaline flowing, just wait until you see King Kong rolling across the screen like thunder is Dolby surround a sound. Indeed this movie will no doubt take the awards in Hollywood with the same thunder as King Kong takes to those skyscrapers. You must see this in 2006.

they come, i.e. taking the coaching, it’s interesting to
note the different observations as Rebecca, Donald Trump and
Randall concluded the interview process.
As coaches we ask our clients to learn from many different
areas and to hold a higher vision for themselves. This
particular show is a way of observing how young, competent,
creative minds, organize in an intense business situation.
Whether relaxing at the spa or planning their next strategy,
the contestants use their talents and innate intelligence to
accomplish tasks and impress the Trump organization.
The coaches chime in:
Would you have said, “Yes” to the Rebecca question? “Of
course”, says Leslie, the coach…the question was “…if you
were me”. It seems logical to add a very competent, earnest
& ethical woman to the mix. And, how delightful to do it
that same night! Coach Kris points out that Rebecca showed
grace and creativity under pressure. Her “can do” attitude
prevailed even in the face of obstacles such as the broken
leg. You’ve got to admire her for that and more.
You saw both Randall and Rebecca take a stand for
themselves:
•How do you take a stand for yourself?
•How clear are you? Randall was clear and his decision came
with ease. Rebecca maintained her composure and remained
professional. Clarity can be a tremendous guiding force.
•You are an intelligent reader, how do you see it?
We are reminded of the wisdom below:
“…live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then,
someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even
noticing it, live your way into the answer.” Quotes our

One of the things we life coaches do is keep our eyes open
for coaching that comes from unusual places, and in this
case it was the final episode of the Apprentice. Certainly
television can be used to provoke intelligent dialogue about
ethics and principles. Did you see The Apprentice the night
Randall was hired and Rebecca wasn’t hired? Randall took a
stand. He said, “No” when directly asked by Donald Trump
whether Rebecca should be hired the same night. He was
clear. He was living within his beliefs and values. He had
a choice. As do you. We always have choices.
As life coaches we are often asked to support our clients to
make new choices. Often these represent significant changes
from the way they used to do things, and these new actions
may seem awkward or out of the blue, especially to our
loved ones. Yet, when we define our values and personal
standards and chose to make choices based upon those, our
life moves forward with much more ease. That awkward phase
lasts only a short time as we step into the new way of being
and behaving.
Try on these words as you think about the professional and
competent behavior demonstrated by Rebecca and Randall
during The Apprentice:
•Alert
•Clear
•Courageous
•Empowering
•Flexible
•Focused
You have a choice and can decide to adopt some of these
words to describe how you will behave the rest of the
week…the rest of the month, or all year. You can design
your own degree of competency whether visiting a spa for
relaxation and rejuvenation or preparing to deliver a
motivating and inspiring presentation to your colleagues.
The choice is yours; it always is. You are on this earth
to add your unique piece to this puzzle called life and you
have opportunities to turn every obstacle into a chance for
greatness much as you saw Rebecca do during her time on The
Apprentice.
Randall was put on the spot, took a stand, made a decision.
It’s proven to be a controversial one and probably
responsible for propelling Rebecca into a very desirable
position she wouldn’t otherwise have had if Randall’s answer
been “Yes.” So, bear this in mind when you get a ‘no’ from
one of your colleagues or family members. It could be a
‘yes’ in disguise and the start of a fantastic new
beginning.
Questions to ponder:
•What no can give that is actually a yes?
•Are you willing to ask for support to making a change?
•Do you have something you know you’ve been wanting to do,
yet keep postponing?
•Are you aware that there is a contribution that only you
can make?
As coaches, one of our favorite reminders is the following
sentence: “The best way to get somewhere is to let yourself
go.” It’s time. You can go. With
support from a coach or this article or your own inner
courage, you, too, can take a stand and design the life of
your dreams. Yes you can!

Donald Trump’s television show, The Apprentice, attracted
the largest audience the night he was to hire his 4th
apprentice. Much about television is a numbers game which
prompted us to think about the numbers in the show. Randall
is 34, Rebecca is 24. Does age matter? Was it his ten
years of maturity that made the difference, or what he chose
to do with those ten years - his education and running
successful businesses? Does a 20 something candidate have a
chance against a 30 something candidate? What do you think?
It also begs the question, is age a barrier to success?
Some of us feel old at 40. Our attitude and actions can
make any number seem old. What if you go around telling
yourself, “I’m too old to (sing in a choir, horseback ride
across the range, insert your item here)?” Is that really
true? Perhaps you are too old to climb Mt. Everest; that
isn’t to say there aren’t still plenty of things left to do
regardless of physical limitations. Who is stopping you
from giving the recital, climbing the hill, doing what you
really want to do? As coaches, we disregard the, “I’m too
(insert complaint here)” excuse. There is always a way to
modify whatever it is you want such that it can be achieved.
Is there a library nearby? A hobby club you might join?
Films to be watched? There are many ways to accomplish
learning…and you can find the essence of your goals and
dreams in many different ways.
Think about it:
•What is the thing you’ve been telling yourself you’re too
old to do (your Mt. Everest)?
•When you look at that thing you’ve been wanting to do,
what’s at the heart of it and where else might you find its’
essence?
•Look for support. Getting support enables you to do what
you want with more ease.
As coaches, we see age doesn’t matter. There are 23 years
between us and we share times when we are being wise and
times when we’re being silly or unwise. We share work
ethics, steadfast support of our clients, interesting
balance in our lives and much more. Age is a number and
counts for things like a senior pass to the movies and
possibly some extra points on the wisdom-o-meter, yet the 40
(or 30, or 20) somethings among us have plenty to offer as
well. Our interaction as life coaches and workshop leaders
is enriched by the difference in our ages, perspectives, and
points of view. We say, “Yes” to it all and invite you to
do the same. Let age support you when you need it to and be
willing to resist using it as an excuse for postponing going
for your goals and dreams.
